Eric's Bio
Eric Smith, Founder & President, Auralex Acoustics
In the late 1970s, amidst his broadcasting studies at Butler University, 17-year-old Eric Smith founded the company that would become Auralex with the intention of providing affordable, effective acoustical treatment solutions for the broadcast and recording industries. While working at top radio stations in Indiana, along with jobs as a mobile and nightclub DJ, Smith decided there was a need for better acoustical treatment products. “That’s when I began to focus on developing practical, real-world, cost effective solutions, and the roots of the Auralex brand were born,” Smith notes. Auralex has expanded steadily over the past 35 years, creating products for a wide range of industry professionals, and for many years Auralex has been the preeminent name in acoustical treatment for the professional audio, project studio, sound contracting, broadcast, commercial and consumer market sectors.
Smith, throughout his career, has been a strong advocate of education, and he has guest lectured at numerous high schools and colleges throughout the country on the subjects of acoustics, broadcasting, entrepreneurship and business ethics. As well as being quoted in print and online for his expertise on the subject of acoustics, Smith is asked on a regular basis to be a panelist at leading industry trade shows and conferences. Smith brings a wealth of personal experience, technical knowledge and a sense of humor to all of his presentations, which focus on basic acoustic theories, sound control issues and solutions, product design strategies, the challenges of a start-up company and what it takes to be successful in business.
Aside from his work with Auralex and as a lecturer, Smith is also a member of the Industry Advisory Board at the Purdue School of Engineering & Technology at IUPUI. Additionally, he is passionate about animal rights and has been involved with the Humane Society of Indianapolis, and with his wife Julie, he is the co-founder and co-owner of Four On The Floor Pet Products, Inc.
