Beginning in the early 1960s, through smash hits by the likes of Wilson Pickett, Etta James, Percy Sledge, Little Richard and others, FAME Recording Studios put Muscle Shoals, Alabama on the map and established a signature sound with some of the Greatest artists in Rock music history. In the last 50 plus years, FAME has been involved in recording or publishing records that have sold over 350 million copies world-wide.

FAME’s Studio A was built in 1961 and when FAME Recording Studios founder Rick Hall passed away at the beginning of 2018, Hall’s son, Rodney, took over as FAME president. Rodney Hall explains, “In 1967, my dad decided to build a B room because of overflow work.” Studio B was still going strong but needed a little TLC. When engineer, producer and musician Glenn Rosenstein, who maintains his own studios near Nashville and Muscle Shoals, went into Studio B about a year ago, he recalls “I needed to get a vocal done and I brought the artist in from New York, put up a microphone and it was by far the best-sounding vocal room I’d heard in my life—and I have worked everywhere in the 40 years I’ve been making records.  There’s magic in the room. But the control room in B, wasn’t quite up to the same standard”, he says. Rosenstein and Rodney Hall had become good friends and both decided to revamp the Studio B control room. Stripping the walls down to the original wall treatment and installing an SSL 6056 E, previously installed in a Dallas studio that had recorded three Stevie Ray Vaughan albums, Studio B is now positioned to accommodate modern work flows while celebrating the history of the facility, which was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2016.

Part of the remodel included the installation of an Auralex Sustain Lens™ cloud assembly that floats above the console. Additional Sustain Lens™ modules were installed in the rear of the room for additional diffusion. Auralex ProPAD-XL™ monitor isolation platforms, SubDude-HT™ speaker isolation platforms, GRAMMA® and GreatGRAMMA™ Amplifier isolation platforms and a HoverMAT™ drum isolation mat round out the new, updated studio.
